About Maureen Shotts

A native Southerner with a lifelong passion for art, Maureen Shotts worked extensively in such diverse areas as clay, calligraphy and photography before returning to her true love: painting. Oils and watercolors were her favorites as a young painter. Studying later with the legendary Frank Engle and Richard Brough, she was inspired to become a lifelong student.

That quest drew her to the renowned portraitist Ned Bittinger, now living and painting in Santa Fe, who she credits with helping shape her technique. Then, working alongside the modern master Evan Wilson, Maureen learned that a disciplined approach to painting suits her perfectly. Intense one-on-one study with Wilson, Bittinger and further study with Atlanta artist Marc Chatov honed her talents and sharpened her perspective, seen in the powerful still life paintings for which she is best known.

Today an elegant Alabama home studio is Maureen's inspiration for exquisite canvases that mirror a world where natural beauty and impeccable quality are always hand-in-hand. Using only the very finest materials, she fills linen canvases with huge soft roses and stately lilies so translucent they seem to swallow the light.

With the disciplined eye of a veteran photographer, she turns her brush to the intricate textures of an antique cloisonné jar or a Mondrian-inspired silk pillow captured boldly in oil. "I am fascinated by textures, form and depth," Maureen explains. "And, most of all, I am drawn into the magic that can happen at an unexpected point in the process as I work."

Inspired by great teachers, gifted with a painterly eye, and always guided by impeccable standards of excellence, Maureen Shotts shares with us through her art a world that beckons us to enter.
