About Fred Sprock
Fred is a native of Charlotte, NC, and a graduate 1966 of Wake Forest.
Prior to taking up oil painting 8 years ago, his art form was stippling – a method composed of thousands of pen and ink dots that create highly detailed images. Encouraged by friends to explore more expressive forms of two-dimensional art, he enrolled in painting classes at Braitman Studio in Charlotte. He has also studied with Richard Fennel, Dee Beard Dean, and Morgan Samuel Price.
While still representational, his work is becoming more interpretive, leaving him and the viewer to explore and discover bits and pieces of imagery that aren’t always initially apparent.
Artist's Statement
Overall, I strive, in a world going too fast, to convey tranquility through vanishing landscapes, relying on muted colors, value contrasts, and soft edges.
Additionally, and importantly, painting has paradoxically taught me to embrace failure. In other words, my inability, sometimes, to paint what I had originally envisioned can lead me down paths I might not otherwise have discovered. The result, more often than not, is a painting that is more pleasing to me than that which I had set out to create.
