About Jan Triplett

Jan grew up in Greensboro, NC and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a BS in Interior Design and a minor in art. She worked with a commercial architectural firm in Chapel Hill, NC before accepting a position with Wachovia Banking Corporation as director of design for their worldwide offices and curator of Wachovia’s corporate art collection. After sixteen years in the design field, Jan started Fancy Finishes, a decorative painting business which she owned and operated in Winston-Salem, NC for several years.

Jan, her husband King Triplett and their two golden retrievers moved to Bald Head Island, NC in 1997 and in 2001 Jan began painting again in oils. She has studied with several nationally recognized artists including Timothy C.Tyler, Gay Faulkenberry, James Sulkowski, Adrian Deckbar, M. Kathryn Massey and Sam Vokey.

Still lifes and dog portraits are currently Jan’s primary areas of painting. She enjoys the challenge of arranging beautiful objects into pleasing compositions of light and color and paints her still lifes exclusively from life. Having control over the subject matter, light and composition gives Jan the ideal situation of being able to completely focus on the work in her studio. He work is traditionally representational and her paintings evoke a timeless elegance.

She rarely personally knows her subjects so Jan’s dog portraits are completely painted from photographs. These commissions strive to portray each pet’s individual personality and charm while capturing their spirit through their eyes and creating a true-to-life portrait. She delights in bringing these dogs to life with paint!

Jan is currently serving her third term as President of the Smith Island Art League on Bald Head Island, NC. She is an artist member of The Bascom Louise Art Association in Highlands, NC, an artist member of Creative Wilmington, and an Associate Member of Oil Painters of America. Jan maintains studios in Glenville, NC and on Bald Head Island, NC. Her work has won several awards locally and regionally in the past few years.
